Wallpaper

You’ve gone through your stock photos and there is some neat pictures but you need to get some new material.  Check out www.iphone4wallpaper.com for starters, there is some great material.  I suggest that you use your phone’s browser so you can save them to the device right from safari, once you get to the image just press down as if you were going to copy it.

Have Photoshop?  Make your own!  The new iPhone 4 retina display is 960X 640, just make a new file to those dimension, throw in your favorite picture to be cropped, then email it to yourself or sync it via iPhoto.

Apps

The hardest thing I’ve found so far is navigating the crApp Store, i only say that because of the amount of apps that should never step foot on your phone.  For this purpose i suggest that you get AppAdvice, the name says it all, these people round up all the apps that are worth your time and money and put them in an easily navigable interface.

This aside, i believe facebook is trying to take off way more than it can chew, i wouldn’t be surprised if you told me there was a facebook OS in the making, you could instantly share everything you did on your computer as you did it…  The other day i read about an interesting company developing a platform called Diaspora, basically a social media platform that would be deployed on a personal server.

I think this idea is fantastic, though wordpress might already provide alot of what this will do the idea of customizeing my social experience and having all the data available to a company like facebook moved to server i control is very enticing.  If you get a chance go over and check out what they’re up to.

• Coda by Panic

Most people would generally jump to the argument that TextMate is the truest way to code anything (an argument that has merit), but Coda is by far the cleanest.  This piece of software seamlessly integrates a textedit, a terminal, an FTP client, and a way to display eBooks for those brain farts that send you to google.

All in all, coda is quick and a great for CSS!

Music

• Ableton LIVE by Ableton

If you’re already making music with your MAC I’ve brought nothing new to the table, Ableton is simply the goto software.  When i finally got rid of the last PC i had and by last i mean the last “VMWare Virtual Machine” (The hardware was given up even earlier) i was using it for one thing only, FLStudio AKA Fruity Loops.  Ableton was an easy switch and once i started to get a handle on the possibilities i never looked back!

Entertainment

• Plex

When most people think of a media experience on the mac they’ll jump straight to iTunes and all the hardware that enable you to access the iTunes Store.  I personally had the Apple TV, which was nice, until i decided that i was no longer satisfied with standard definition.  I needed an alternative that would allow me to watch my ever growing collection of HD content.  I loaded up my macbook with Plex and plugged it into my Samsung 1080p TV and the solution was there.  Plex has an amazing interface with third party plugins showing up more and more (netflix, TedTV, etc…).  Plex will even download all the cover art for your collection for you.  A must for those building mac home theatres.

My description is going to be just like Tweetie itself.  This is the best way to integrate twitter into your desktop, it is very minimal but retains all the functions you would need for twitter, you can even have several accounts logged in at once!

Productivity

• Things by Cultured Code

I’m not much for task management software, still a paper person in this regards, but things is the way to go if you do take this to the digital world.  With mobileme syncing and the iphone you can have you tasks with you at all times.

• Wallet by Acrylic

I use wallet daily.  This little piece of software is grand, you can house all of your important data in a secure database and sync it with its iphone app as well.  Wallet can hold your credit card numbers, web site accounts, billing account.  I use it to keep the countless codes that are involved with running servers, MYSQL passwords and such.  This one is for all of you memory-impeded folk.
